This GTO
was owned by Monk King, who owned Monk King Pontiac out of Denton TX. It was built
and raced in the late 60's and early 70's. It then disappeared for many years. It
was found and purchased by Don Deppe of Newton, IA in the fall of 1999. The
restoration has included a frame off rebuild. The paint and graphics were duplicated from old pictures. The
drive train now is a 455 with SD rods, 4 bolt main, forged pistons, Pete
McCarthy cam, ram air IV heads, Victor intake, Dominator carburetor, and a
turbo 350 transmission. The rear end had to be replaced as the original was bent.
The original was a 12 bolt with a 5:56 gear to help out the Nascar 366 cube
inch engine that was purchased from Pontiac and "tuned" by Smokey Yunick . It now has a 12 bolt
rear end with a 4:11 positive traction. The car has been down the 1/8 mile a
few times and has a lot of fine tuning to get it competitive. I am always on
the lookout for more information about Monk King and this car's racing history. I do know it was raced
a lot at Green Valley raceway in Texas.
